This site was created for the dual purpose of cataloging and examining luxury brands’ philanthropic activities and providing consumers with a comprehensive philanthropic luxury shopping guide!
Given that luxury brands operate in a capitalist market economy and are bound by shareholders to make a profit, it is the brands which also strive for ’social profits’ that this website celebrates.
Luxury brands have an absolute responsibility to give back. By maximizing the benefits of globalization and extracting the world’s most valuable natural resources, their profit margins have grown exponentially since the 1980s.
The concept of corporate philanthropy is nothing new. However much of what companies have done in the past has not been tremendously meaningful nor impactful due to sporadic and relatively small amounts of money given.
What is to be most applauded and what this site aims to highlight is a brand whose philanthropic efforts are impactful and include a high level of involvement with the recipient organization or cause – not merely cutting a check in order to receive a tax deduction.
I believe the highest human need is to leave behind a legacy by striving for purpose beyond ourselves. As educated and concerned consumers, we ought to demand Brand Philanthropy through rewarding brands with our tremendous purchasing power. In this way, we can encourage all brands to “do well while doing good.”
Special thanks to Matthew O. Brimer for the graphic design and web development of my site and to Joan B. Hornig for its inspiration. Without them, this site would not have been possible.
